I had a discussion today with KDP Support, because I was under the impression that you’re not permitted to submit stories which are available elsewhere for free on Amazon. My understanding was that books which later become free are ok, but that books which have always been free aren’t. It turns out that this is not the case; Amazon simply reserves the right to price-match them down to free (or not) at their discretion. I had previously been under the impression that it constituted a TOS violation to do this.
According to the email I got from Amazon, this is actually perfectly acceptable per their TOS, so I am now listing “She Only Wore a Shirt to the Funeral” on Amazon for $0.99 and reporting a lower price (requesting price-match) to $0.00 as soon as it gets listed.
Anyone who sees it on Amazon for a fee… be aware that it’s going to be free once they price match it, so I would suggest that you don’t buy it until it becomes available – in fact, please click the “report a lower price” link and tell them it’s free on Smashwords. If you want it on your reader, I recommend downloading it from Smashwords, where it’s already free; I don’t want to feel bad that you’re spending money on this title. If you really want to pay for one of my stories, I recommend “Winning the Genetic Lottery” or whichever of my other books fits your particular kink the best.
